It’s the year 2040, and you’re a business investor looking to put your money in the best financial center in the world.
Where do you set your sights? Singapore? London? Tokyo? Shanghai? Dubai?
Think again.
Within a matter of decades, you’re going to want to plant your money in a booming new metropolis in Africa.
Not only that, but you’re going to be looking for the best and the brightest African talent and our cutting-edge advances in technology.
This vision of Africa’s future isn’t a dream. It’s a promise.
It’s still too early for me to share specifics, but I will say this:
I’m the Chief African Strategist on the incredible team that’s working to make this happen, and we’re moving fast.
We’re deep in the planning stages of this spectacular African Startup City, and it’s going to be better than anyone can possibly imagine.
—Magatte Wade
You may wonder why we’re building a new city from scratch instead of putting our resources into developing an existing metropolis. The answer is simple: governments and bureaucrats have saddled African business with arcane rules, regulations, and laws that hold business back.
I know from first-hand experience how difficult it can be to get a new business off the ground, and foreign investors are wary of putting their money into African businesses because the tax codes are too complex and the tariffs are too high.
If we tried to build on an existing framework, we’d spend 90 percent of our time simply trying to undo the mess that’s already been made—and let me tell you, people in power and their friends have entrenched interests and do not want changes to happen that could threaten that.
A Startup City gives us the opportunity to start fresh.
We can create a legal system that’s more friendly to entrepreneurs and that allows them to thrive. We can give entrepreneurs the opportunity to create and innovate, provide a best-in-class business environment that will attract global investment, and create economic prosperity for African families.
Once our Startup City is finished, we’re talking about a million new jobs. Hundreds of millions of dollars in new investments. World-class educational centers, business facilities, and residences. There will be start-ups on every corner, and the whole place will buzz with energy.
Creativity. Optimism. Prosperity. Life.
This city will be the premier destination in Africa for high-impact enterprises and top talent. It will have the highest GDP per capita in the continent, and it’s already underway.
We already have a site, a full development roadmap, and a world-class team of experts who specialize in rapid development projects like this one.
Today, I’m going to give you a sneak peek into how the construction of the next African metropolis will unfold. Development is broken into two phases:
Phase 1:
While this city is geared toward promoting business and entrepreneurship, we know that we’ll only attract the best and brightest when we’re able to provide the best and brightest quality of life. No one wants to live in an industrial park, no matter how nice the offices are.
That’s why, during this phase, we’re focused on creating the foundations that will offer residents—and their families—prosperous, fulfilling, well-rounded lives: an energy supply distribution center, water distribution center, co-working spaces, schools, retail spaces, state-of-the-art residences, green spaces, and parking.
We’ve designated land for an industrial zone that contains a business center and production facilities for the textile and durable goods industries. We’ve also allocated spaces to an agricultural experience, outlet mall, and showroom center. Public pavilions will be framed by lush fields, and residents will be able to visit the farmers’ market, restaurants, and sport center, all in a single stretch.
Everything will be designed with beauty, practicality, and livability in mind. Think spacious, inviting, light, and airy.
By 2040, more than 100,000 people will call this city their home, and by the time they move in, we’re determined for them to have everything they need to thrive.
Phase 2:
Once the core facilities have been established and our early adopters have moved in, we’ll shift our focus to expanding the range of available industries and amenities. This is when our already booming city will become a world-class economy.
Once this phase is complete, our Startup City will not only be able to compete with the most desirable, high-tech, and luxurious financial centers across the globe; it will leapfrog some of them.
We’ll expand our central business center, which comes complete with a financial district, corporate buildings, high-end residences and amenities, and an innovation hub.
Our health district, which contains conference facilities and a world-class medical area, will be joined by an arts and culture district, brimming with cinemas, theaters, a concert hall, a fashion district, and an art district.
A new university campus will perch at the edge of the city, and students and faculty will have plenty to do in the bustling new market district, which will be teeming with retail and nightlife.
Oh, and I forgot to mention: The city is on a waterfront, so we’ll also have a resort area for tourists and local weekenders, a beachfront zone with high-end residences and hospitality facilities, and a marina designed for efficient trade.
If this all sounds too good to be true, let me assure you, it’s not.
I’ve made it my life’s mission to carve a path toward African prosperity, but at my core, I’m a realist. I’m not selling you a pipe dream. The team and I are actually taking action to turn this vision into a reality.
We have a clear plan:
Create a governance framework, legal system, and business model that will attract entrepreneurs, investors, and talented workers. This phase is already well underway.
Construct a state-of-the-art city that contains the fundamentals of a good life: reliable utilities, schools, medical facilities, nice places to live (from affordable to luxury housing), great places to shop, incredible places to work, zones for producing goods, etc.
Enhance the city with luxurious amenities, more entertainment options, cultural experiences, tourist attractions, and the finest research facilities on the continent.
Use this city’s success as a launchpad for even greater African prosperity: more Startup Cities, major regulatory changes in existing cities, and a flood of foreign investment in businesses across the continent.
Ready or not, this city—and the bright future it brings—is on its way.
It will revolutionize the way business is done in Africa, and will inspire countless African cities to follow in its footsteps. Within a few decades, it will transform the entire continent.
With your support, we can seize this future sooner than you may think.
Follow our exciting journey as we bring this city to life, and take part in the community of people who believe in a prosperous future for Africa.
A masterpiece. I hope this startup city becomes something.
Ghana comes to mind.
I think the former African Union Ambassador to America HE Mrs Ariana Chihombori-Quao's ADDI&ADDH has something similar in their pipelines. Please look into it.
This is beyond inspirational. In which country might this city be built?
